Hannah sits bowed in grief, her head wrapped in a pale veil and her hand pressed against her brow beside a rough stone wall. The posture of weariness and inward prayer reflects the anguish described in 1 Samuel, when Hannah carried the pain of barrenness and provocation to the Lord at Shiloh. Her sorrow is not presented as resignation, but as the beginning of faithful petition: she pours out her soul before God and entrusts her deepest longing to Him.
